"I've been performing as a professional magician since 1996 — close to 30 years of weddings, corporate events, and private functions. I've also spent the last two decades running one of the UK's longest-established entertainment agencies, booking magicians into hundreds of weddings every year. So when I talk about what a wedding magician should cost, I'm not guessing — I'm drawing on nearly three decades of seeing what works, what doesn't, and where couples get the best value for their money."

What You're Really Paying For — An Insider's View

By Nick Rushton, Director

When couples see prices ranging from £150 to £600+ for what looks like the same thing — a magician at a wedding — the natural question is: what's the difference?

Having booked magicians into weddings for nearly 30 years, I can tell you the price gap comes down to three things: reliability, skill level, and the ability to read a room.

Reliability is the one you can't test in advance

A cheap magician might be brilliant 90% of the time — but on the day they cancel because they've double-booked, or turn up late because they underestimated the drive, you've got 120 guests and a gap in your timeline you can't fill. The magicians on our books at the £350+ level are full-time professionals. This is their livelihood, not a side hustle. They carry public liability insurance, they arrive early, and they communicate with you and your venue coordinator in the weeks before your wedding.

Skill level matters more than you'd think

Close-up magic is one of the hardest performance disciplines there is — there's nowhere to hide when someone is watching your hands from 18 inches away. A magician who's been performing full-time for 10+ years has a depth of material that means they can adapt on the fly. If a table has young children, they'll switch to visual, punchy effects. If they're entertaining a high-end venue table, they'll bring out the sophisticated mind reading. A less experienced performer has one set and delivers it the same way to everyone.

Reading a room is the difference between good and great

At a wedding, a magician needs to judge when to approach a group, when to leave them alone, when to move on, and how to handle the uncle who's had a few too many. That judgement comes from thousands of performances, not dozens. I've seen magicians at the £150 level who are technically skilled but socially awkward — they interrupt speeches, overstay at tables, or don't pick up on subtle cues. At the £350–500 level, you're hiring someone who manages the room as much as they perform magic.

My honest advice: if your budget is genuinely limited, a good magician for 1.5 hours during the drinks reception at £295 will give your guests a fantastic experience. Don't stretch to 3 hours with a cheap performer — a shorter booking with a better magician will always outperform a longer one with someone who isn't up to the job.

What Affects Wedding Magician Prices?

Duration

Longer performances cost more. Each additional hour typically adds £75-£100 to the price.

Date & Season

Peak season (May-September) and Saturdays are in highest demand. Weekday or winter weddings may get discounts.

Travel Distance

Most magicians include travel within a certain radius. Distant venues may incur additional travel costs.

Guest Numbers

Large weddings (150+ guests) may need longer bookings or multiple magicians to ensure everyone sees magic.

Experience Level

Award-winning magicians with TV credits and decades of experience command higher fees than newcomers.

Wedding Magician Prices by Region (2026)

Prices vary across the UK, largely driven by demand, travel distances, and local cost of living. Here's what to expect:

Region Typical Range (2–3 hrs) Notes
London & South East £400–£600 Highest demand, most competition, premium venue expectations
South West £350–£500 Strong wedding market, reasonable travel distances
Midlands £325–£475 Good value, large pool of experienced performers
North West £300–£450 Competitive market, excellent value
North East £295–£425 Lower cost of living reflected in pricing
Yorkshire £300–£450 Strong demand from the barn wedding market
East Anglia £325–£475 Fewer performers means slightly higher prices
Wales £295–£425 Travel can add cost for remote venues
Scotland £350–£500 Fewer specialists, travel costs a factor

Guide prices for a professional, full-time magician booked through our agency. You may find lower prices from part-time or less experienced performers, but we'd always recommend prioritising quality — see Nick's advice above.

Is a Wedding Magician Worth the Cost?

Let's do the maths. For a wedding with 100 guests:

  • A £395 package = £3.95 per guest
  • Compare to: DJ (£400-£600), Photo booth (£300-£500), Band (£1,500+)

For less than the cost of a round of drinks, every guest gets a personal, interactive entertainment experience they'll remember and talk about for years.

Money-Saving Tips

  • Book early – Some magicians offer early booking discounts
  • Consider weekdays – Friday or Sunday weddings often cost less
  • Off-peak season – Winter weddings may qualify for discounts
  • Bundle services – Ask about package deals if booking multiple entertainers
  • Be flexible on timing – Shorter, focused performances can be very effective

How Does a Magician Compare to Other Wedding Entertainment?

Entertainment Typical Cost Duration Guest Interaction Setup Required
Close-up magician £295–£500 2–3 hours Every guest, personally None
Photo booth £300–£500 3–4 hours Queued, small groups Space + power
Wedding DJ £400–£700 Evening only Passive (dancing) Stage + power
Live band £1,500–£3,000 2 sets (evening) Passive (dancing) Stage + power + space
Caricaturist £350–£500 2–3 hours One guest at a time Table + chair
Singing waiters £800–£1,500 20–30 min reveal Group (surprise act) None

A magician is one of the few forms of entertainment that reaches every guest individually, needs zero setup, and works during the daytime — the part of the wedding where most other entertainment options don't operate.
